Great Movie moments-Kevin Costner, J.F.K. Costner owes a lot to Oliver Stone’s cutting and storytelling but he manages to sum up a mammoth-sized courtroom case with Stone’s own logic and emotion. Tremendous stuff.
Key moment: “Someday, somewhere, someone may find out the damn truth. We better. We better, or we might just as well build ourselves another government like the Declaration of Independence says to when the old one ain’t working — just a little farther out west.”
I’ve neglected this tumblr for too long. What better way to resurrect it though?
This is one of my favorite scenes of all time from one of my favorite films of all time. There are at least 20 scenes from this movie that I could post here but this is always going to be the best one. Great writing, acting, blocking, set decoration, and directing are all on display here. Sure, Oliver Stone has fallen off since the 90’s but even if he never makes a great film again, he’s left us with an amazing catalog of films.
I wish I fuckin’ shot that.
Band Of Brothers
I remember when this first came on HBO and I was glued to my tv every night it was on. Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red Line were the only films that really had this sort of look to them at that time but were different in the sense that Saving Private Ryan tried for more realism while Thin Red Line tried to mix realism with an incredible look. I love the look of Thin Red Line and I might even make another post with a scene from that but I always though that the look that Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers had was more unique. Sure there have been people who have tried it since but its never really gotten back to the washed out yet warm look that both of those had. Anyway, Band of Brothers is over 10 hours long and I could pick maybe a couple hundred shots that I loved in it but two shots in this long ass video are tied for my favorite. The first is at the 2:17 mark with Blithe screaming as bullets whiz past his foxhole, striking the trees and ground around it. The second is at the 3:36 mark where Blithe is being screamed at to fire his rifle and he takes a moment to gather the courage and then he takes aim and the sounds of the battle around him drop out leaving only the sound of his rifle and the noises he is making. It ends with what might be the most badass shot of the whole series of the spent cartridge flipping out of the rifle in slow motion with a metallic spinning type sound over it. I don’t know really how to explain all this but I fucking love it and I wish I fuckin shot that.
P.S. Im not saying that this scene isnt worth sitting through. I love the whole thing so if you’ve got 10 minutes to spare. watch it all. or better yet, go get the entire series.
Climates
Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan
Cinematography by Gökhan Tiryaki
I feel like Turkish Cinema has always been sort of a joke with all those really really bad remakes they made in the 70s and 80s but Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Gökhan Tiryaki working together have made some of the most beautiful films Ive ever seen. This is the first Turkish film I ever saw and it led to me checking out a whole lot of not so good stuff. These two working together cannot be beat though. It this film Climates there are these incredible shots of this beach (seen in the picture) and then later on some pretty great stuff in snow. I can’t stress enough how much people really should check out this film and their latest one Three Monkeys. I wish I fuckin shot that. I wish I could shoot anything even close to the stuff these two do.
Gomorra
Directed by Matteo Garrone
Cinematography by Marco Onorato
It wasn’t until just recently I started checking out Italian films. I had always found them rather bland until I saw Martin Scorsese’s My Voyage to Italy. It’s almost all about Roberto Rossellini’s films with some mentions of Fellini, Vittorio de Sica, and Luchino Visconti. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re into Italian Cinema (not so much the Italian genre films though.) Anyway, back to the film Im making this post about. I realize a lot of people in the US haven’t been able to see Gomorra yet but if you get the chance and are a fan of mafia films, its definitely worth checking out. Its a little different and sadly needs back story to really understand but it has to be the best organized crime film of the past decade and its a true story thats put the author of the book’s life in pretty serious danger. I wish I fuckin shot that. Who doesn’t? Mafia films are cool as shit even if you’re a snob.
Last Life in the Universe
Directed by Pen-Ek Ratanaruang
Cinematography by Christopher Doyle
I feel like this guy’s films never get the recognition they deserve. People think Thai films and they think of Tony Jaa. Backflips off of elephants while kicking dudes in the face aside, those films are pretty awful. So do yourself a favor and netflix Last Life in the Universe, Ploy, or 6ixtynin9. Take you pick on which ones I wish I fuckin shot.
I Love Sarah Jane (watch in high quality)
Directed by Spencer Susser
Cinematography by Adam Arkapaw
This is the entire short film. Sure, the whole zombie thing is old at this point but I first saw this short last year and must’ve watched it a hundred times since. Fucking good stuff for a short done for cheap. I wish I fuckin shot that.
Let the Right One In
Directed by Tomas Alfredson
Cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema
Before I even got to see Let the Right One In (one of my favorite films of 08), I had seen this scene in the trailer. I mean, its cool enough that someone is on fire in it. I love people on fire in films. Damn, I wish I fuckin shot that.
